Established October 1, 1991 by the Federal Government of Nigeria, University of Uyo inherited students, staff, academic programmes and the entire facilities of erstwhile University of Cross River established by the then Cross River State Government in 1983. Vision Statement
To be a centre of academic excellence by utilizing the available human and technological resources for teaching, research, community service and sustainable development.
Mission Statement
To diligently pursue scholarship and deploy its output for human capacity development and economic growth in the society, with active participation in Information and Communication Technology, sensitivity to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and responsiveness to global environmental changes.
The colours of the University are Green, Copper Brown and Yellow which further emphasize the university’s commitment to national integration and service through excellence in learning.
- An open book symbolizing learning in all its universal ramifications;
- Two elephant tusks, two young palm fronds and a single ‘Ekere’ (Metal Gong) all located at the centre of the open book, symbolizing and emphasizing knowledge as power, an instrument of service and peaceful coexistence;
- A circle enclosing the symbols and the motto, surrounded by another circle within which the name of the University is inscribed with NIGERIA at the base. The circles symbolize integration and unity.
